Meeting Aesclepius

Mosquito Lagoon, FL
The wisest person I ever knew in my life was my great grandmother, Beulah.  I used her image during this week’s meditation practice, Meeting Aesclepius.  My grandmother passes away over ten years ago, so it was very strange for me to imagine her and visualize her and use her essence in this exercise.  I’m not really sure if this exercise helped me or not, but I would be willing to try it again to see if I get the same effects.
The saying “One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself” means to me that in order to give the best advice and leadership, the leader must have experienced those things himself.  Basically, how can you truly show someone how to do something without having done it yourself?  For a health and wellness professional, I believe this means the professional must live a healthy lifestyle in order to give advice on a healthy lifestyle.  To implement psychological and spiritual growth one must first have an open mind, be willing to learn about the different practices, and then actually practice the form they choose.

  1. Grandmothers are truly special people. I too used my grandmother because she touched me spiritually at a young age with her marvelous loving energy. My grandmother told wonderful stories about our Pomo (California Indian) ancestry. Spirits, she said, where all around us, some good and some not so good. Later in life, she became quite religious, in her attempt to seek refuge from those not so good entities. It is easy for me to except the spiritual side of myself and others. It’s like home to me. Just letting go and enjoying the ride is the way I like to put it. Rationality has it place but so does the imagination and quest for inner peace. We all deserve time for ourselves. To relax and reflect, to energize and remember those people whose energy we can harness and utilized to lift our spirits and provide needed assistance. Evolution and awakening is at the horizon. Let’s enter together!

  2. Great post! Grandmothers are wonderful influences in our life. I think the older generation is a very valuable generation that can be looked up to and we can learn a lot from them.

I agree with you that in order to give the best advice and to be a leader to someone else a leader must experience those experiences themselves. I don’t think someone can preach something that they personally have not practiced. I also agree with you that a health and wellness professional must live a healthy lifestyle in order to be a credible source and be able to give advice on living a healthy lifestyle.

  3. Hello KAthryn, great job on your blog. I was never that close to my grandmothers to ever think of them in this aspect. But I know so many wise and amazing women I am blessed to be around. SO I can imagine that having a grandmother whom you admire and respect after that amount of time is just amazing.

You are so correct in your statement that we can't teach what we don't know. I believe that we are poster boards of what we are . I am a fitness trainer and although my weight does fluctuate within 15 pounds of when I compete on stage and what I maintain I still try to portray the importance of exercise and health. I would not be able to portray a fitness professional if I was still obese and ate unhealthy every meal. Thank you for your post.

  4. I know it was hard to visualize your grandmother during this week meditation. I visualized my father who has been gone for alomost 20 years. This exercise made me relax, happy, and sad because my father is not here with me. I think that the phrase is imply saying that you cannot lead a person if you have not gone through the experience yourself. This is so true. I agree that we must live a healthy lifestyle in order to give healthy advice.

  5. I would imagine this exercise was very moving for you, especially visualizing your grandmother. Isn't it funny how grandparents can say the craziest stuff and once you sit and think about it, it makes perfect sense.
We all need leaders that have been where we want to go, regardless of the destination. They may not even have to be at their destination yet, but at least on the same journey, just a little further down the path.

  6. Hi Kathryn,

I found almost the same words I would have said for my Grand-Mother who has passed away as well 5 years ago (May her Soul rests in perfect peace). I use her also as a role model. I agree with you totally about the statement in question 2. "Be what you want the World to be".
